ESPN RISE rolls out its first list of fall boys' soccer players to watch for the 2009 season.

As the fall season nears, a more detailed list will follow, broken down by state.

Friday, we offer this list of 40 players as a starting point. There are sure to be changes as top prospects who spent last year in the
U.S. Soccer Residency program are sure to trickle back to high school, and some elite players may opt to skip high school play.

Harrison Petts highlights the starting list of 40 players. The Zionsville (Ind.) senior who has committed to Indiana scored 41 goals,
had 26 assists, was named to the ESPN RISE fall boys' soccer first-team All-America squad.

Other notables are Maryland commit Marquez Fernandez from McDonogh School (Owings Mills, Md.) and Joseph Lopez from
Brentwood (N.Y.). Both were second-team ESPN RISE All-America selections.

BY AIDAN KELLY

Javanon ’92
repeats as Region II champs — and Javanon ’91 joins them.

An interesting mix of thunderstorms, lightning, hail and searing heat greeted Louisville’s best soccer talent
when it descended on South Dakota for the US Youth Region II Championships from June 19-24.

Eleven teams from Derby City traveled to Sioux Falls — 10 as Kentucky State Open champions and one as a wildcard.

Javanon doubles its national title chances

By Derek Poore • dpoore@courier-journal.com • July 8, 2009

The crown of Kentucky soccer belongs to Louisville's Javanon Soccer Club.

Two Javanon teams qualified for the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships, which will be held July 21-24 in Lancaster, Mass.,
near Boston. It is the first time Kentucky has ever had two teams in the prestigious national tournament.

And the club is seeking its first national title since 2006.

Javanon's '91 and '92 International boys' teams (the teams are named for the year of their players' birth)
qualified for the tournament by winning their divisions at the Region II Championships held June 20-24 in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Javanon Club squads kick competition

Last Wednesday was important for United States soccer.

Beating Spain — the No. 1-ranked team in the world — in the FIFA Confederations Cup by a 2-0 scoreline brought with it publicity not
normally associated with the sport in this country.

Spain had not lost a game in its last 35, so it was a big deal. Really.

And it became water cooler talk. Or toilet talk, depending on where you like to have your work conversations.

The Big Kick Off!
The select soccer has just begun and Greater Louisville's top teams are ready to show their stuff
by Adian Kelly

High school students across Louisville & southern Indiana have been training hard with their select soccer teams
through the winter, & now its time to show the world what they've got.

Club soccer features many levels of teams, from recreational leagues where anyone can play, to highly competitive
teams where players must try out for a certain club. These tryouts are normally held 10 months before teams actually
start playing in travel tournaments & their respective leagues. The most competitive teams play in the Midwest
Regional League or MRL, where the teams travel all over the region for games & tournaments. Other successful
teams play in various divisions of the Kentucky Select Soccer League & Indiana Soccer League.

We bring you a look at the teams to look out for this season, the leagues they play in & where they might be by season's end

BOYS' PREP SOCCER: Goblirsch, Buttram, Bouthilette and Shearer take
All-Area awards (03/02)

By NATHANIEL BRYAN
nbryan@thenewsenterprise.com

Jack Goblirsch felt his junior season wasn’t near as solid as his sophomore campaign.Fortunately for Elizabethtown’s standout center midfielder,
the seven area boys’ high school soccer head coaches didn’t agree with him. Goblirsch ran away in the voting for Offensive Player of the Year as
well as the top spot on the first team on the 2008-09 News-Enterprise/Coaches’ Boys’ All-Area Soccer Team.

Goblirsch assisted on 18 goals and scored 14 of his own as he led his Panthers to a 12-9-1 overall record and spots in both the district and region
tournament championship games.

While some might look at Goblirsch as a flashy goal scorer, Goblirsch doesn’t mind setting the table.

“I don’t think of (scoring) much. I’m trying to do whatever it takes to get the (win) at the end of the day.If it’s scoring or laying it off, that’s fine with me,”
 Goblirsch said.

That versatility is what made Goblirsch stand out, said Elizabethtown coach Jon Parsons

BOYS' PREP SOCCER: E'town hopes fifth time could be the charm
The Elizabethtown Panthers have reached four consecutive 5th Region Tournaments, but have
come up short each time. Coach Jon Parsons thinks this could be the year of the Panthers.

by NATHANIEL BRYAN

Headlining the returning players is junior central midfielder Jack Goblirsch, who swept the 2007 Area Offensive
Player and Sophomore of the Year awards as well as being named to the coaches’ All-State Team.

“He deserved all of that and I look for bigger and better things from Jack. It’s been a great pleasure to see the progress he’s
made and it’s all due to how hard he’s worked. He stays busy. He constantly works at it,” Parsons said.

Goblirsch’s running mate in the midfield is fellow junior captain Nick Link, a second-team All-Area selection last year.
