Riggs' two
goals lead St. X to soccer crown, 4-1
By Jason Frakes
November 7, 2009
GEORGETOWN, Ky. If there's really been
an argument in recent years about the state's most successful boys'
soccer program, it can be put to rest.
After capturing a record 10th state
championship Saturday night, St. Xavier High School now has history
on its side.
Cameron Coppola got the Tigers on the
scoreboard in the eighth minute and Tyler Riggs paid tribute to his
grandmother with two second-half goals as St. X beat Greenwood 4-1
in the State Tournament final before 2,200 fans at Toyota Stadium.
The Tigers became the first team ever to
win championships in three straight years and broke a tie with
Ballard for the most titles in state history. But coach Andy
Schulten said Saturday's victory was about the present, not the
past.
Riggs was named the
tournament's MVP.

South Oldham star Vitalis is Mr. Soccer
By Jason Frakes
Will Vitalis, who scored 40 goals for South Oldham High School this
season, has been named Kentucky's Mr. Soccer.
Vitalis helped the Dragons finish 16-5-2 with 16th District and Eighth
Region championships. Their season ended with a 4-0 loss to eventual
state champion St. Xavier in the Section Two game.
He just has a knack for taking the ball and putting it into the net,
South Oldham coach Denis Beall said. He was double- and triple-teamed
all year, and as the season went along people tried to find different
ways to stop him. He was still able to get the ball to his foot and
create.
Vitalis, who also had 12 assists, has committed to the University of
Louisville.
